monkey's adventures with silk worms.

monkey visits a man who grows silk worms and learns where silk comes from. Very interesting. I also noticed Monkey has a nicely illustrated recipe for bread pudding on his pages.

We've been growing some insects where I work. They are called India Meal Moths. They start out as little eggs, then grow to the larvae (wiggly worm) stage, then to a pupa and finally turn into a moth. So far we've gotten to see the first stages, no moths yet.

We learned that Indian Meal Moth's have sharp jaws that allow them to cut a doorway for their new home. The larvae we have at work were living in a nutritional bar. Now they have a larger home inside a tupperware container, complete with a small pool. The larvae are only 2 days old and seem pretty shy.

Unfortunately for the India Meal Moth they don't have redeeming qualities of a silk worm, and are considered a pest. I wish we could all just get along, but many people object to eating insects, parts of insects, or insect byproducts, which can happen to the unwary consumer when the pesky India Meal Moth decides to build a house in your bag of cookies.
