The Durham Mill - Ceresota Flour Mural Project is fascinating.
The artist used a technique used by mural painters since the time of Michelangelo. She made a full size paper drawing of the mural, with tiny holes in the paper, and then transferred the outline to the building using a sock filled with black powder as described in Page 14 of the photos showing the creation of the mural.
Here's a quote from the site -
"The new mural is a historically accurate painting of that original ad from the late 19th century, magnificently brought to life by professional fine artist Barbara Fugate of Seattle, Washington. Barbara recently completed a mural restoration project on a 14th century building in Entrecasteaux, France, and is currently an instructor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Seattle."
