Vietnamese God

Vietnamese God is a really interesting blog about life in Hanoi. Great pictures of the city street vendors, cafes, pedal merchants, as well as mind expanding stories about eating cat and dog meat, and a lucky sister who has two little baby girls and works as a chef in a big hotel from 5 am to 10 or 11 pm (during the high season).

The author has a nice kind way of writing, plus an obvious appreciation for food, flowers, people and the place he lives.

Postscript - Regarding the stories of eating cats or dogs.

I can imagine people having a variety of reactions to eating either one of those animals. That's only a cultural affect though. If you are going to kill and eat an animal why not a cat or dog? It's hypocritical to say it's okay to kill chickens, pigs, goats, sheep or cows and eat them but it's barbaric or inhumane to kill a cat or a dog. We don't eat cute animals? We don't butcher our pets?

Baby goats are pretty darn cute and pigs can make great pets...so?

A good way out of this dilemma of deciding what animals deserve to be slaughtered can be found at Veganism in a Nutshell.

From the go.veg page,

"A vegan diet is, without a doubt, the best choice for our health, the only sustainable choice for the environment, and the only choice that expresses in a positive manner who we are in the world — compassionate people, compassionate toward people and toward animals."

I'm not inclined to argue what's right and wrong, whatever an individual chooses is up to them.

Choosing what to eat, drink or smoke doesn't make you who you are. Better to be a kind meat eater than a mean vegan. Smoke all you want...just be nice. Whatever works best for you on your path to enlightenment and inner peace (assuming that's where you want to be headed). Whatever works.

Maybe a wild night of drinking and smoking, and a big breakfast of steak and eggs and bloody mary's is the path you should be on right now...that's fine too. In my slightly younger days I'd probably be right there with you, but I been there, done that and I'm on a different (I hope better for me) road right now.

Peace to you.
