For my money there's nothing that beats a regular Weber kettle style grill. They are in the 100 dollar range, easy to put together, last a long time, allow good temperature control, are big enough to cook a turkey, and you can use them for alder smoking (or other wood) for salmon. I like the fact they use charcoal for the flavor. I'd also get a chimney to light your charcoal using crumpled up newspaper, that way you don't impart the taste of lighter fluid to your food (although you miss out on the fun of playing with lighter fluid and a fire).

Bob Wards has a Tilia Indoor Stove Top Smoker that would be cool. The smell of alder (or other wood chips) is wonderful outside, maybe it would be sweet to have that smell fill up your home or apartment.

For outdoor smoking of meat, fish or game nothing beats a Little Chief smoker. You can buy alder (or whatever flavor wood you like) and have a lot of fun sitting around, sipping on beverages, smelling the smoke, while your tasty treat smokes. Don't throw the cardboard box away, it's useful for keeping the temperature up on cold days (you just leave the smoker in the box on those days), plus the box gets a nice smokey patina and smell and makes your garage smell good when you put it away.
