On This Shortest Day of the Year

We celebrate the coming of the light.
Before calendars and clocks
Men wondered what was happening to the sun
Days getting short, shorter, shortest

And then a pause and ever so gradually
A little more light
The beginning of a new year
Another cycle of birth, growth and death

But on a day in Bethlehem
A new light came into this world
A new story came to be
No more eye for an eye

All the old things passed away
To be seen in a new light
We celebrate the son
With love and peace and joy

In anticipation of good things to come
Trusting, we have faith
Watchfully waiting
Listening quietly
